十年，說長不長，說短不短，卻足使pavement成為九○年代美式獨立搖滾最傳奇的名字。自1989年成軍，至1999年散團，pavement推出的五張錄音室專輯，每一張都有資格成為生涯代表作，公認是樂史上少數「從未發表過一張失敗專輯」的好手。更重要的，當indie rock這個辭彙尚未創造出來之前，號稱為懶蟲世代（slacker generation）教主樂團的pavement，已如先知般體現了當代indie文化的可貴面向 — 表裡如一且追求自我。真要論斤計兩的估量影響力，pavement不僅毫不輸給sonic youth與yo la tengo，由於樂團早已解散，其短暫卻耀眼的生涯，更像一顆天際的流星，行蹤總是牽動人心。發表於1997年，pavement第四張大碟《brighten the corners》是他們成軍來最可親的一張。有別於前作《wowee zowee》追求的強悍實驗性，主唱stephen malkmus這回譜出的多是溫暖動聽的中板短歌，尤其開頭的〈stereo〉與〈shady lane〉，更是朗朗上口的pavement金曲兩首。不過，所謂的動聽，仍是以非常pavement式的情境呈現：神經質的顫抖唱腔、抽筋扭曲的吉他solo、歪歪斜斜的貝斯線與搖晃不穩似乎不太對拍聽來卻又舒暢莫名的閒散鼓點。將這些低傳真元素各個拆開，或許狀似荒謬，但攪和在一起，那種邪惡的趣味與彼得潘「抗拒長大」般的悠哉逍遙感，正是pavement獨步江湖的經典絕招 — 邋遢，卻又酷的不得了。（by陳德政）
